Not too much time to post tonight, but with a major winter storm on my doorstep this is worth posting about. The NWS offices in Duluth & Minneapolis have begun issuing Winter Storm Warnings for northern Minnesota and far northern Wisconsin.
This graphic (to the right) shows the weather story from NWS Duluth, with expected snowfall totals by Wednesday evening.
It looks like the south shore will reach the 10" mark with lower amounts farther south. Freezing rain and sleet will be the first precipitation before turning over to all snow.
In addition, strong winds will blow across Lake Superior from the north. The forecast calls for wind gusts up into the 30s for the lower terrain and higher gusts at higher elevations. Besides creating horizontal snowfall and whiteout conditions, the winds will also push the ice floes on the big Lake up against the south shore's shoreline.
When storms like this occur in past years, this is when ice shoves threaten to close US2 in Superior and Ashland.
Regardless, all highways will quickly become snow-covered throughout the day on Tuesday. The latest road conditions from the State Patrol are constantly updated on the Wisconsin DOT's website (here). Road conditions as well as any accidents and closures are also posted.
Mr. Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel is doing live reports from Canal Park in Duluth, Minnesota Today with Mike Sidel from TWC doing live reports from the same spot This Evening. Lets hope this storm is a good one, since we have the Nation watching us.
ReplyDeleteTimothy, that's awesome! I also get excited when TWC hunkers down in GB at Lambeau Field during the NFL season. I always try to find them but usually have something more important to do... ;)
ReplyDeleteTWC is not one of the channels I get.
ReplyDeleteThe first burst of snow passed through Ashland & Bayfield counties between 11:30 and 14:00.
US2 east of Ashland (up through Birch Hill) towards the UP is snow-covered and very slippery. I saw one car in the ditch at 13:00 as I left work. Maple Hill was no picnic either, the higher elevations are getting more snow/cold than the lakeshore.
Some places are already closing early today.
Its rain down here, We have gotten 0.8 of rain so far, was some sleet burts earlier, now it's starting to cool down, 1-3 Inches for my area.
