Warnings being issued for a late-season snowstorm!

Just a quick post updating the Watches that have been upgraded to Warnings.

NWS Duluth and Minneapolis have issued Winter Storm Warnings for parts of their forecast areas. In addition, Blizzard Warnings are in effect for the Twin Ports at the Head of the Lake.

I took each NWS Offices' warning map and drew the forecast snow fall amounts on top of each, taken from the Weather Story maps. Hope it's legible and clear enough.

It looks like up to 14 inches is expected at my location, as well as the area northwest of St. Cloud. More is expected in Duluth and Superior with wind gusts up to 50 mph off Lake Superior, creating blizzard and whiteout conditions.

  1. Are you under a BLIZZARD WARNING or the WINTER STORM WARNING?

  3. I live in northeastern Bayfield county, so I'm in the Winter Storm Warning. However, I'm also very close to the Lake Superior shoreline, so winds may gust high enough to produce whiteout conditions at times.

I'm glad your rain gauge arrived! We can't wait to get your reports :)

  4. Is Lake Superior open near you? I recall the Coast Gaurd coming to break up the ice... did they complete their mission? If so I am imagining large chunks of ice floating around bumping into each other. If this is the case, these winds that are anticipated may bring a fantastic showing of the gnarled waters of the Chequamegon Bay! Please take some vids to share!

I enjoyed this day near Lake Superior (Jan 18, 2003). vid 1, vid 2

    Nice scout! Excitement!

  5. Impressive waves and spray on the vids! Looks cool but I can feel the cold wind just by watching. Is that your voice in Vid1? "Holy..." I didn't quite catch the middle part of that expletive? LMAO.

I'm about 6 miles inland, about half-way up the side (elevation-wise) of the Bayfield Peninsula. ~440 ft above Lake Superior at my place.

The last I saw was that most of Chequamegon Bay was still ice covered, the islands provide a lot of wind and wave protection to the bay - hence the reason the Coast Guard was asked to begin breaking ice. However, it was only the channel between Bayfield and La Point, they wouldn't come deeper into the bay. As far as I know, they broke the ferry's channel without incident.

I will make sure to get some pictures of the bay before I leave Washburn today, but the strongest winds are forecast for tomorrow. I think most of us believe schools will closed, when that happens, most offices and businesses close too. It looks like I'll be hunkered down inland tomorrow.
