The system is slowly departing, leaving plenty of snow to the north.Over 2 feet of snow fell overnight, north and west of Duluth, making for a difficult life today -- 19 reports of closed schools (several others delayed) and up to 2000 people with power outages in central St. Louis county, The news story for Duluth's Northland News Center is here.
I put together this map (to the right) from storm reports listed on the NWS Duluth website. 32 new inches was the highest, reported 5 miles north of Virgina on the Iron Range.
The sharp cutoff of snow actually follows the high terrain pretty well, perhaps the elevation helped to focus the snow. Virginia and Hibbing are almost a thousand feet higher than Lake Superior!
Temperatures are still mild across the area. The map (to the left) shows temperatures and reported weather at ASOS stations across the Northwoods at 10:12 this morning.
Asterisks (*) indicate snow currently falling, while solid bullets denote rain. Equal signs show light fog and the 8 on its side indicates haze.
Temps in the 30s are common in the central part of the state with 40s along the north and east. Temperatures will probably dip below freezing tonight but begin to recover tomorrow. Have to watch two systems... on Tuesday and Friday.
It was only rain across northern Wisconsin last night. The NWS mentioned the possibility of some snow mixing in with rain overnight, but temperatures remained just a notch above freezing, keeping it all rain.
This radar screenshot (to the right) is from 17:57, centered on Duluth, showing the rain across northwestern Wisconsin and the Arrowhead of Minnesota.
This morning I measured 0.3 inches of rain in my gauge (featured in this picture). My weather station (in the background) measured 0.26". The station is usually a hair less that the 4" rain gauge... that's why I like keeping a manual back-up!
I am down to 10.9" of snow pack this morning, the rain melted 1.4" overnight. In the last week 10.7" has melted!! Overnight temperatures did not fall below freezing, like I assumed they would - my low was 32.2 degrees.
I have a buddy (born/raised in GB) who lives in Grand Rapids, MN. Turns out he's in the Valley for a job interview. He missed out on all that wonderful snow... ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad!! I bet he wishes he was stuck in his driveway, shoveling out 23" of heavy & wet snow :)
ReplyDeletetee hee...
ReplyDeletecmlnmbs, are you an observer for CoCoRaHS?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about joining and I'd like to know your take on what it's like.
Scout,
ReplyDeleteI am not a member of CoCoRaHS, but I think it's a fantastic volunteer organization.
I've been making precipitation measurements (both rain and snow water equivalent) since 2000, but I've never joined CoCoRaHS.
Why not? I've been all over the place and my mother was left 'holding down the fort' (i.e. college, Peace Corps, moving to a different residence) and I didn't want to put the burden upon her when I wasn't able to take measurements. To her credit, she's done a wonderful job of reading the gauge, but her life is busy and she can't always take measurements on a set schedule every day. And now I've pulled my weather station and rain gauge from my parent's house and relocated to a new location. I'm just not ready yet.
This is the real reason I haven't joined, and this includes a comment OSNW3 wrote out concerning active reporters. I don't want to commit to the program if I can't report every day, on time. I get ticked off by missing reports and I don't want to be one of them.
My philosophy is either do it properly, or do not do it. When I can measure and report every day with 100% commitment, then I'll join.
Having said all that... I strongly encourage you to become a part of CoCoRaHS. It'll benefit you and the weather community. By keeping precipitation records you'll get a better grasp on current conditions and how they compare with climatological averages, as well as sharing this information with other weather lovers.
I'm not the expert on CoCoRaHS here, that'd be OSNW3's department, do ask him any questions you have. At the risk of being called a hypocrite... I can only recommend that you JOIN!!
OK...Thanks!...
