A late-winter snowstorm will sweep across the region today and tonight.Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan.
Heavy Snow Warnings have been issued for west-central Wisconsin and central Minnesota.
Snow is expected to begin mid-day today and end by noon tomorrow (Tuesday).
Amounts? This image (to the left) is from the NWS Duluth and shows today's Weather Story. Of course, today's topic concerns forecast snow amounts.
7 to 11 inches are possible for Gogebic, Iron, Vilas, Ashland, Price, Sawyer, Washburn, Rusk, Barron, Polk, and southern Bayfield counties.
4 to 8 inches are expected for northern Bayfield, Douglas, and Burnett counties.
Is a snowstorm like this unusual?
It's a little late to have this large an amount of snow, but a snowstorm at this time of year is not unusual. Some examples:
1) I looked at my family's records from southern Ashland county (since 2000) and found that 5 inches fell on 5 April 2003.
2) OSNW3 left a comment that on 11 April 2007 he received 5.3 inches at his place in Oshkosh. Thanks for the info!!
3) Notes from my roommate indicate that between 14 and 16 inches of snow fell on 4 April 2007 outside of Washburn in Bayfield county. This map (to the right) is from NWS Duluth that shows totals from that storm.
Last Winter, here at OSNW3, we measured 5.3" of snowfall from a storm on April 11, 2007. It was a wet snow and didn't accumulate like a mid Winter snow of 5.3" usually would. Check out the radar from that storm. It was impressive. April 2007 Observations.
ReplyDeleteI fudged the radar link the first comment, so I deleted it.
It so happens that I have an animated radar image of the date your roommate was referencing. Apr 3, 2007 & Apr 4, 2007. Back then I didn't have the every 15 minute automatic save setup and I was saving them manually. Regardless. Fun stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe amount of information you keep coming up with is amazing - what don't you have?! The loops are great!
ReplyDeleteI was in GB this last weekend visiting college friends. They live between the East and Fox Rivers and are anxiously watching how much rain you guys will get down there. There were still snowbanks and the ground was still rock solid with frost, but the rest of the snow is gone.
This is an interesting system overall... Heavy Snow and Blizzard Warnings on one side, Flood Watches on the other, and some tornadoes with large hail farther south.
Talking with older generations up here has been interesting... it that this is what winters used to be like in past decades.
I remember getting 7" of snow on April 17, 2007.
ReplyDeleteFunny... whatever I do have, which isn't much, I will share with pleasure. All the Precipitation Observation data have a "daily weather description" and if the description is linked there is a radar loop to help define that particular daily observation.
ReplyDeleteYes, this storm is a dandy. It reminds me of the one almost a year ago that we've been referring to today. (4/3-4/4). I will have a US loop and a Local loop of this storm. The Local loop will be linked on the "daily weather description" for tomorrow or Wednesday depending on when it clears out.
Earlier this Winter I overhead some folks saying that this Winter was reminding them of an "Old Fashioned Wisconsin Winter". It's been an active one!
I suppose I should link the Precipitation Observations. Click on any month and then any linked "daily weather description".
