29. A late-winter snowstorm will sweep across the region today and tonight.
Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan.
Heavy Snow Warnings have been issued for west-central Wisconsin and central Minnesota.
Snow is expected to begin mid-day today and end by noon tomorrow (Tuesday).
Amounts?
This image (to the left) is from the NWS Duluth and shows today's Weather Story. Of course, today's topic concerns forecast snow amounts.
7 to 11 inches are possible for Gogebic, Iron, Vilas, Ashland, Price, Sawyer, Washburn, Rusk, Barron, Polk, and southern Bayfield counties.
4 to 8 inches are expected for northern Bayfield, Douglas, and Burnett counties.
Is a snowstorm like this unusual?
It's a little late to have this large an amount of snow, but a snowstorm at this time of year is not unusual. Some examples:
1) I looked at my family's records from southern Ashland county (since 2000) and found that 5 inches fell on 5 April 2003.
2)OSNW3 left a comment that on 11 April 2007 he received 5.3 inches at his place in Oshkosh. Thanks for the info!!
3) Notes from my roommate indicate that between 14 and 16 inches of snow fell on 4 April 2007 outside of Washburn in Bayfield county. This map (to the right) is from NWS Duluth that shows totals from that storm.
